The 12 houses in astrology

The first house

The first house is the beginning of the houses. It starts at the Ascendant, the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth. Everything else in the house system is counted from that point. Without a birth time, you do not have a reliable first house. You still have planets in signs. You do not have a helm.

Traditional topics of the first are the body, the temperament, the manner of a life, and the way a person enters a room. It is an angular house, one of the four strongest places, because it is an angle of the sky: the horizon itself. Planets in the first house are conspicuous. They describe qualities people meet before they meet a biography. The sign on the cusp, the rising sign, colors that entrance even when no planet sits in the house. A planet ruling the rising sign carries the first house's errand into whatever sign and house that ruler occupies. Beginners sometimes stare at the Sun and skip this. The Ascendant ruler is often the chart's most practical sentence.

In the natural scheme that pairs signs with houses in order, the first house shares its topics with Aries, and so with Mars, the traditional ruler of Aries. That is a teaching correspondence. It does not mean every first house is Aries. In a real chart the first house is whatever sign was rising. If Taurus rises, Venus rules the helm, and the entrance is taurean regardless of Aries sitting somewhere else. Keep the natural pair as a memory aid, and read the actual rising sign as the fact.

Whole-sign houses give the entire rising sign to the first house. Quadrant houses begin the first house at the Ascendant degree and may spill into the next sign before the second-house cusp. The topics stay stable across that argument. The planets that count as "in the first" can change at the edges. If you are learning, pick one system and say which one you are using. Mixing them mid-sentence makes a planet appear to be in two places.

The house opposite the first is the seventh, the descendant, the other person. A reading of the helm that never looks across the horizon misses the pair the chart is built on. Angular houses support each other. The first is the self of the entrance. The tenth is the public act. The seventh is the partner. The fourth is the root.

Planets here act early and personally. Benefics in the first are traditionally a support to the life and the body, a sweeter entrance. Malefics in the first are traditionally more exposed, a life that meets effort or fear at the door. Those are tendencies of the vocabulary, not medical claims and not moral grades. Condition still rules: a dignified Mars in the first is a different helm from a Mars in fall, out of sect, square Saturn. Read the planet's sign and aspects before you announce the house.

In practice, name the rising sign, name its ruler, and say where that ruler lives. Then name any planet in the first house and let it modify the entrance. That is the helm. The rest of the chart is what the helm has to steer. For the natural sign, read Aries. For the natural ruler, read Mars. For the method of putting the pieces together, read the guide to the birth chart.
