The 12 houses in astrology

The tenth house

The tenth house is the top of the chart, the angle of noon. In quadrant systems its cusp is the Midheaven, the degree culminating in the south in northern latitudes. In whole-sign houses the tenth is the tenth sign from the Ascendant, and the Midheaven falls somewhere in that sign or, at some latitudes, in a neighboring one. The topics hold either way: public standing, vocation, reputation, the ruler or the office, and the act the world can see. Modern readers say career. The older word is honor, which includes career and also the question of the name you carry when you are not in the room.

It is an angular house, one of the four strongest. Planets in the tenth are hard to hide. They describe the style of a public life, for better or worse. A benefic there traditionally supports reputation. A malefic there traditionally makes the reputation a site of effort, fear, or contest. Condition, sect, and aspects decide whether the visibility is a craft or a exposure. Visibility itself is the house's gift and its cost.

The natural sign is Capricorn, and the natural ruler is Saturn. The memory aid is the climb, the office, and the standard that outlasts a mood. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, so the textbook tenth also remembers disciplined effort, a heat that has agreed to a long plan. The actual tenth-house sign depends on the rising sign and the house system. If Aries rises in whole signs, the tenth is Capricorn and the textbook is literal. If Leo rises, the tenth is Taurus, and Venus rules the vocation. Read the sign that is actually there. A venusian tenth and a saturnian tenth ask for different public manners.

Opposite the tenth is the fourth house, the private root. The axis is the name in the world and the name at home. Many charts become legible only when you read both. A brilliant tenth with a troubled fourth is a different life from a tenth and a fourth that share a ruler. Parents are signified variously from these two angles in traditional texts. Use that as a tradition, not as a single assignment, and do not collapse a parent into a planet.

Planets in the tenth describe how a person meets the public task. Saturn here is topically native, a vocation with weight, a slow authority, a fear of failing the standard. The Sun here puts vitality on stage. Jupiter enlarges the office, including the risk of overreach. Mercury makes a public life of words, trade, or skill. Venus makes a public life of mediation, art, or grace, and can make reputation depend on being liked. Mars makes a public life of contest and effort. The Moon makes the public mood changeable and ties reputation to care or to the body of the crowd.

The ruler of the Midheaven, or of the tenth sign, is a planet to find early. Where it sits is where the vocation looks for its fuel. A tenth ruler in the sixth ties the honor to daily labor, the long path from service to standing. A tenth ruler in the first makes the person and the role hard to separate. A tenth ruler in the seventh makes the public life a partnership, literally or in the way decisions are shared.

In practice, ask what this chart is willing to be seen doing for a long time. For the natural sign, read Capricorn. For the planet of the standard, read Saturn. For the private root, read the fourth house.
