Jupiter
Jupiter is the greater benefic, the planet of increase, faith, law, and protection. In a birth chart he describes where a life looks for meaning, where it trusts, where it teaches or is taught, and where it tends to have more room than it expected. Benefic means he reconciles and enlarges. It does not mean a promise of wealth, a religious outcome, or a life without cost. Too much Jupiter is one of the traditional problems: excess, a belief that has not met a fact, a generosity that cannot find its edge.
He rules two signs in the older scheme. In Sagittarius, mutable fire, Jupiter is in a domicile of aim: the far road, the doctrine, the arrow. In Pisces, mutable water, he is in a domicile of mercy: the unbounded sympathy at the end of the zodiac. Modern astrology often gives Pisces to Neptune and keeps Sagittarius for Jupiter. This library leads with the two traditional domiciles and names Neptune on his own page. If a book assumes a single modern ruler, notice that before you compare readings.
He is exalted in Cancer, classically near 15 degrees. The greater benefic is an honored guest in the Moon's sign, where protection, shelter, and increase agree. He is in detriment in Gemini and in Virgo, opposite his domiciles. Gemini wants two reports and an unset conclusion. Virgo wants the count and the particular. Jupiter's wide faith fits both poorly. He is in fall in Capricorn, opposite the exaltation, where Saturn's earth asks every increase to show its structure. Jupiter in fall can still prosper. The prosperity looks earned, narrow, and slow.
In the joys, Jupiter rejoices in the eleventh house, the place of allies, hopes, and the gifts that come through others. The natural houses of his signs are the ninth, Sagittarius and the far road, and the twelfth, Pisces and the hidden or confined room. A Jupiter in the ninth is the textbook pilgrim. A Jupiter in the twelfth can describe faith practiced in private, or protection found in withdrawal. The twelfth's older topics are stern. Jupiter there mitigates. He does not erase the place.
Sect: Jupiter belongs to the day sect, with the Sun and Saturn. In a day chart his beneficence is more direct. In a night chart he is out of sect, still a benefic, and sometimes more uneven in the way he enlarges a topic. Day and night are a traditional switch. They are worth one sentence in a reading, after the sign and the aspects.
Jupiter's cycle is about twelve years, so his sign in a natal chart is shared by a cohort and still made personal by house and aspects. A transit of Jupiter over a natal planet is a year-scale visit, an expansion of that planet's topics, not a magic spell. Expansion includes the problems. A Jupiter transit to a difficult natal configuration can enlarge the difficulty on the way to giving it meaning.
Read him as the place the chart says yes, and ask what the yes is faithful to. Then check the condition. Jupiter in domicile with a trine from Venus is a different yes from Jupiter in fall, square Saturn. Both are Jupiter. For the fire home, read Sagittarius. For the water home, read Pisces. For the guest room of shelter, read Cancer.
