Planets in astrology

Mercury

Mercury is the messenger. Among the classical planets he is the least committed to a single moral color. Traditional authors call him common, or adaptable: he takes the nature of the planet he is configured with, and he takes the weather of the sign he is in. In a birth chart he describes speech, writing, trade, counting, study, the short road, the hand's skill, and the way a mind joins one thing to the next. He is the planet of the name.

He rules two signs, and the two domiciles are not the same craft. In Gemini, mutable air, Mercury is the street messenger: pairs, rumors, siblings, errands, and the pleasure of a second opinion. In Virgo, mutable earth, he is the editor and the counter, and he is also exalted there, classically near 15 degrees. Domicile and exaltation in one sign is a strong traditional dignity. Virgo Mercury sorts. Gemini Mercury connects. Both are Mercury. A chart that has him in one of those signs is reading him at home, in that particular room of the home.

He is in detriment in Sagittarius and in Pisces, the signs opposite his domiciles. Sagittarius wants a single aim and a belief worth riding toward. Mercury's love of the unset detail fits that weather poorly. Pisces wants image, mercy, and a boundary that dissolves. He is also in fall in Pisces, opposite the exaltation in Virgo, so the water domicile of Jupiter is a double poor fit: detriment and fall together. He can still be brilliant there. The brilliance is poetic, approximate, and easy to lose in the ordinary errand. Detriment and fall ask for craft. They are not a statement that the person cannot think.

In the joys, Mercury rejoices in the first house, the helm, where speech and the body meet at the entrance of a life. The natural houses that share his topics are the third, Gemini's place of letters and neighbors, and the sixth, Virgo's place of labor and skill. Joy, domicile, and natural house are three different compliments. A careful reading says which one it means.

Mercury retrogrades more often than the slower planets, for a few weeks at a time, several times a year. Apparent retrograde motion is a review of the degrees he retraces: messages reconsidered, contracts reread, journeys replanned. A natal Mercury that is retrograde describes a mind that works well in review, often more inward, not a broken intellect. A transiting retrograde is a season, not a personality.

Because he is common, always read Mercury's aspects. Mercury conjunct Saturn is a different speaker from Mercury conjunct Jupiter or Venus. The conjunction lends him a style. A square gives him an argument. A trine gives him an easy road that he may travel without noticing the scenery. In traditional delineation he is also the ruler of the lots and the translator of light when he carries an aspect from one planet to another. You do not need that technique to begin. You do need to notice whom he is talking to.

Sect is subtle with Mercury. Many authors call him diurnal in his masculine signs and nocturnal in his feminine ones, or they follow the sect of the planets he joins. For a beginner, the sign and the aspects teach more than a sect argument. Give him one line: how this chart names, trades, and changes its mind. Then read Gemini or Virgo if you want him at home, and Sagittarius or Pisces if you want the weather he finds difficult.
