The square

The square is the aspect of 90 degrees, a right angle, one quarter of the circle. Two planets stand three signs apart, or within orb of that distance. The square is a hard aspect. Hard, in this vocabulary, means frictional. It does not mean cruel, and it does not mean the life is ruined. It means the two topics do not cooperate by nature, so the chart develops them by effort, argument, or a decision that costs something.

The sign logic is modality. Squares join signs of the same modality and different elements. The cardinal signs square one another: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The fixed signs square one another: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. The mutable signs square one another: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. Cardinal squares are conflicts of beginnings. Two plans want to start, and they start in different elements, so the chart is always opening a door with the other hand on a different latch. Fixed squares are conflicts of holding. Two loyalties refuse to move. Mutable squares are conflicts of adjustment. Two changes pull the same life in two translations at once.

Aries square Cancer is the textbook cardinal square: fire that wants to go, water that wants to shield. Mars and the Moon are the natural rulers of that pair, so a Mars-Moon square often carries this weather even when the signs are a different cardinal pair, and the signs still have to be named. A square in fixed signs lasts. People feel it as a standoff that becomes a character. A square in mutable signs fidgets. People feel it as a problem that changes shape whenever they solve the previous version.

The square's reputation is worse than its use. A chart with no squares and no oppositions can lack a muscle. The square is often where a person becomes competent, because the friction will not let the topic stay theoretical. Mars square Saturn is the old picture of heat meeting a wall. It can be frustration. It can also be the craft of cutting only what the wall permits, which is how a great deal of real work gets done. Venus square Saturn can be a seriousness about love that feels like delay and turns out to be a standard. The aspect supplies the tension. Dignity, sect, and house say whether the tension has a workshop.

Orbs for the square are moderate. An exact square is one of the loudest things in a chart. A wide square between planets in signs that do not actually square is a softer claim, and sign-based doctrine may not count it. Say the orb if you are making a strong claim. Applying squares build toward a crisis of decision in the traditional predictive arts. In a natal chart they describe a tension the person meets as they grow into the planets. Separating squares describe a tension that has already shaped them.

When one planet squares two others, draw the figure. The planet receiving both right angles is doing the heaviest lifting.

In practice, name the two topics and the shared modality. Ask what decision the square keeps demanding. The trine is a different gift. The opposition is the full-face version of a hard aspect. For the cardinal example, sit with Aries and Cancer until the friction has a plain sentence.
