Astrology aspects for beginners
The trine
The trine is the aspect of 120 degrees, one third of the circle. Two planets stand four signs apart, or within orb of that distance. Trines join signs of the same element. The fire signs trine one another: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. The earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. The air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. The water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Same element means the two planets are already speaking a compatible weather. The aspect is traditionally harmonious. Help passes along it with less effort than along a sextile, and with none of the square's demand.
That ease is the gift and the trap. A trine can describe a talent, a protection, a pleasure, or a way two parts of a life support each other without a meeting. It can also describe a rut. Water trine water can be a deep empathy and a closed circle that never meets an outside fact. Fire trine fire can be courage and a confidence that never meets a limit. Earth trine earth can be reliable craft and a refusal to change a method that has started to fail. Air trine air can be a brilliant social or mental range and a life that never lands. When you read a trine, ask whether the ease is being used. An unused trine is still in the chart. It is not a medal.
Aries trine Leo is the textbook fire trine, cardinal fire supporting fixed fire, the start feeding the heart. The Sun rules Leo and is exalted in Aries, so this particular trine has a classical sympathy beyond the shared element. Mars rules Aries. A Sun-Mars trine in fire signs is heat recognizing heat. It can look like clean courage. It can look like a person who acts before the water signs in the chart have been consulted. The rest of the chart is the consultation.
Orbs for the trine are traditionally among the wider ones, along with the conjunction and the opposition. Still, exactness matters. A trine within a degree is a channel the person can often feel. A trine of seven or eight degrees is a background harmony, real and easy to overstate. Sign-based doctrine counts the trine when the signs share an element and regard each other by trine, and then the degree tells you the volume. A degree trine across signs that do not share an element is out of sign, a weaker or a different claim, depending on the school. Learn the in-sign trine first.
Benefics in trine are the classic picture of protection: Venus trine Jupiter, a reconciliation that has room. Malefics in trine are less advertised and just as useful to understand. Mars trine Saturn can be disciplined effort, a blade and a wall that have found a working angle. The trine does not make Mars or Saturn into benefics. It makes their cooperation smoother. They may cooperate on a hard project, or they may smoothly entrench a fear. Read the houses. A smooth talent in the tenth and a smooth talent in the twelfth are different lives.
A grand trine, three planets each trine the others in one element, is a closed circuit of ease. Read it as a strong elemental habit, then look for the square or opposition that cuts into it. That hard aspect is often what turns the habit into a life.
In practice, name the element and ask what the help is avoiding. For the opening that still wants a hand on the latch, read the sextile. For the aspect that builds by effort, read the square.
