Astrology aspects for beginners
The sextile
The sextile is the aspect of 60 degrees, one sixth of the circle. Two planets stand two signs apart in the usual count, or within a modest orb of that distance. Traditional and modern authors agree that the sextile is a friendly aspect, softer than the trine and much softer than the square. They also agree, if they are careful, that friendly is not the same as finished. A sextile is an opening. Someone still has to walk through it.
The geometry has a sign logic. Sextiles join signs of compatible polarity that are not the same element. Aries, a fire sign, sextiles Gemini and Aquarius, air signs. Taurus, earth, sextiles Cancer and Pisces, water. The pairs are the classical sympathies of hot signs with hot signs in a different element, and cold with cold. Fire and air feed each other. Earth and water give each other body and cohesion. The sextile is that sympathy at a remove of one sign, close enough to help, far enough that the help is not automatic.
Compare it with the trine, which is 120 degrees and joins the same element. The trine flows. The talent or the ease is already in the grain of the chart, and the risk is that nobody cultivates it. The sextile is a step more awake. It describes a resource that appears when a person reaches. Venus sextile Mars can describe a workable heat between affection and desire, a chemistry that improves when it is chosen on purpose. Mercury sextile Jupiter can describe a mind that gets wiser when it bothers to look up from the detail. The sextile does not install the virtue. It describes a door that is unlocked.
Orbs for the sextile are traditionally tighter than orbs for the conjunction, the trine, or the opposition. A wide sextile is easy to over-read. If the planets are in signs that do not actually sextile, a loose degree contact across the wrong signs is a weaker claim. Sign-based aspect doctrine, common in Hellenistic reading, asks first whether the signs regard each other. Aries regards Gemini by sextile. Aries does not regard Taurus by any of the five major aspects. Degree aspects that ignore the signs are a different method. Beginners do well to learn the sign version first, because it matches element and modality, and then to notice when a degree orb is tight enough to speak even at the edge.
Applying sextiles are opportunities still forming. Separating sextiles are openings already used or already missed. In a natal chart both are structural. The applying ones often feel like a skill the person grows into. The separating ones can feel like a talent that showed up early and needs remembering.
Reception makes a sextile stronger in traditional delineation. If one planet is in a sign the other rules, the planet in domicile hosts the one who aspects it, and the friendly aspect has a house to meet in. Mars in Gemini sextile Mercury in Aries is a mutual reception by domicile in the traditional scheme, a cooperation with extra courtesy. You can read the plain sextile before you learn reception. When the chart keeps showing hosts and guests, reception is the name.
In practice, treat the sextile as a tool on the bench. Name the planets, name the elements they join, and ask what small deliberate act lets them help each other. For the same-element path, read the trine. For friction, read the square. For a fire-and-air pair, read Aries and Gemini.
