The eighth house
The eighth house is the house of what is shared and what is sealed. Traditional topics include death, the resources of the partner, inheritance, debt, tax, and fear. The death topic is the one that needs the clearest boundary. Older astrology used the eighth when it spoke about mortality and about the goods of the dead. This library records that so the traditional map stays intact. It does not predict a death, a danger, or a term of life. In ordinary practice the eighth house describes intimacy, other people's money, the obligations that bind two estates, and the kind of change that follows a real merging.
It is a succedent house, following the seventh angle. Succedent houses hold what the angle produces. The seventh produces a bond or a contract. The eighth asks what that bond costs and what it pools. The strength is real. The topics are rarely casual, which is why the house has a reputation it only partly deserves. A well-supported eighth house can describe a profound trust, a clean handling of shared money, or a talent for crisis that is actually competence.
The natural sign is Scorpio, and the traditional natural ruler is Mars. Modern books often put Pluto in that role. Lead with Mars if you are learning dignities, because Mars has a full traditional condition to read: domicile, exaltation, sect, aspects. Use Pluto as an intensifier when he is actually in the house or tightly configured, and say that you are speaking the later dialect.
The actual eighth-house sign is the eighth from the Ascendant. In whole signs, if Gemini rises, the eighth is Capricorn, and Saturn rules the shared resources. That is a more structural, cautious picture than Scorpio's, and it is the picture that belongs to that chart. Scorpio remains the textbook weather: fixed water, retention, the refusal of a half-truth.
Opposite the eighth is the second house, one's own movable goods. The axis is mine and ours, the store and the pool. When a money story is really a story about a partner's money, or a debt, or an inheritance, the eighth is the room you are in even if the person thinks they are talking about their own second house. Look at both rulers.
Planets in the eighth describe the style of sharing and of the sealed room. Mars here is topically native in the traditional scheme, a cutter in the place of merging, which can be courage in a crisis or a bond that feels like a contest. Venus here can describe a deep affection and a complicated relationship to shared worth. Saturn can describe fear, delay, or a heavy integrity about other people's resources. Jupiter can mitigate and enlarge, sometimes both at once. The Moon here feels the topic in the body and the memory. None of these is a sentence about how long a life is.
Follow the ruler of the cusp. An eighth-house ruler in the seventh ties the shared goods tightly to the partner, which is often obvious and still worth saying cleanly. An eighth-house ruler in the second brings other people's resources back into one's own store, a classic inheritance or debt picture, symbolic until the life fills it in.
In practice, ask what this chart treats as binding. The eighth is honest about mixtures. For the natural sign, read Scorpio. For the traditional ruler, read Mars. For one's own goods, read the second house.
