The 12 houses in astrology

The second house

The second house is the house of movable goods. In traditional language that means money and possessions that can be moved, as distinct from land, which belongs more to the fourth. It is also the house of livelihood, of the resources a person can draw on, and of the body's support in a material sense: food, stores, the question of enough. It is a succedent house, following the angle of the Ascendant. Succedent places are strong, less sharp than the angles, and concerned with what the angle produces. The first house steps in. The second asks what that life has in its hands.

This is a symbolic topic, not a financial plan. A strong benefic in the second describes a style of resourcefulness or of ease with worth. It does not forecast an income. A difficult planet there describes effort, fear, or intensity around the same topics. It does not forecast a loss. The reading gives you a style and a place to pay attention. The life does the arithmetic.

The natural sign of the second house is Taurus, and the natural ruler is Venus. That correspondence is a teaching device. The actual sign on the second-house cusp depends on the rising sign and the house system. If Gemini rises in whole signs, the second house is Cancer, and the Moon rules the goods. Read the cusp you have, then remember Taurus when you want the pure topical picture of keeping, appetite, and tangible worth.

The house opposite the second is the eighth, other people's resources, debt, tax, and the goods that come through a partner or an inheritance. The pair is having and sharing. A second-house story that never looks at the eighth misses the way a store is mixed with someone else's store. Fixed signs occupy the natural version of this pair, Taurus and Scorpio, which is why the topics feel stubborn: what is mine, and what is bound up with a bond.

Planets in the second act through resources and through the sense of value. Venus there is the textbook sweetness, a care for beauty and enough. Saturn there is a classic picture of caution, thrift, or a delay in the feeling of security. Jupiter enlarges the topic, including the risk of excess. Mars spends, competes, or works the resource hard. Mercury trades and counts. The luminaries make the topic central to vitality or to bodily safety. Always read the sign the planet occupies. A Saturn in the second in Libra, where he is exalted, is a different economy of feeling from a Saturn in the second in fall.

The ruler of the second cusp matters as much as any planet in the house. If the cusp is empty, the ruler tells you where the livelihood goes to live its story. A second-house ruler in the tenth ties resources to public standing. A second-house ruler in the seventh ties them to a partner. Those are statements of place, not of destiny.

In practice, ask what this chart treats as enough, and where that standard was learned. Then look at the sign on the cusp, its ruler, and any occupant. For the natural weather of keeping, read Taurus. For the planet of worth, read Venus. For the other side of the store, read the eighth house.
