The fifth house
The fifth house is the house of what a life makes for joy. Traditional topics include children, pregnancy in older medical correspondences this library does not use as advice, pleasure, games, gifts, romance as play and courtship, and the creative act. It is distinct from the seventh house. The seventh is the sworn partner and the open other. The fifth is the spark, the date, the performance, the child, the thing made because making it is the point. Confusing the two makes every love story sound like a contract, or every contract sound like a game.
It is a succedent house, following the fourth angle. Succedent strength is real and secondary to the angles. The topics can still dominate a life. A chart with the Sun, Venus, or a stellium in the fifth will often feel fifth-house even if the angles are stern. Let the concentration of planets tell you the emphasis, and let the angular houses tell you the structure.
The natural sign is Leo, and the natural ruler is the Sun. The memory aid is the heart, the center, and the generous show. Venus also rejoices in the fifth house, a traditional joy that fits pleasure and creation even though Venus does not rule Leo. A Venus in the fifth is a planet in her joy: affection and art have a place that suits them. The Sun in the fifth is a luminary in the house that shares his sign's topics. Both are loud, and they are loud for different reasons. Say which reason you mean.
The actual cusp follows the Ascendant. Whole-sign fifth houses are the fifth sign from the rising sign. If Cancer rises, the fifth is Scorpio, and Mars, in the traditional scheme, rules the place of pleasure. That is a different weather from Leo, and it is the weather you must read. The Leo page remains the pure topical picture.
Opposite the fifth is the eleventh house, friends, allies, and hopes. The pair is the joy one keeps in one's own creative life and the fortune that comes through a circle. Children and friends, romance and alliance, the personal performance and the group's plan: when a fifth-house matter becomes political or collective, look across the axis.
Planets in the fifth describe the style of play, creation, and the begetting of things, including literal children in the traditional topic list. Read that list as a symbol first. A fifth-house Saturn can describe a serious or delayed creativity, a duty attached to joy, or a careful approach to children. It is not a statement that joy is forbidden. A fifth-house Jupiter enlarges the same topics, including the risk of excess. Mars plays to win. Mercury plays with words and games of skill. The Moon makes the joy bodily and changeable.
Follow the ruler of an empty fifth. A fifth-house ruler in the tenth makes the creative act public, a vocation or a reputation. A fifth-house ruler in the twelfth makes it private, a studio with the door shut. The aspect to that ruler tells you whether the joy has support.
In practice, ask where this chart is willing to be warm without a memo. Name the sign, the ruler, and any planet in the house, and remember Venus's joy if she is the one sitting there. For the natural sign, read Leo. For the luminary, read the Sun.
