The 12 houses in astrology

The eleventh house

The eleventh house is the house of the circle that supports a life. Traditional topics include friends, allies, the counselors of a ruler, the gifts and good fortune that come through other people, and hopes. The older tone is more political than the modern word community. The eleventh is the place of supporters: people who are not the spouse of the seventh and not the kin of the third and fourth, people bound by aim, patronage, or friendship. Hopes belong here because a hope is a future held with others or held in the open air of a plan.

It is a succedent house, following the tenth angle. The tenth produces a public standing. The eleventh asks who stands with it, and what good can come of that company. Succedent strength is steady rather than sharp. A life can be saved or shaped by this house without the house ever looking like the main character.

The natural sign is Aquarius, and the traditional natural ruler is Saturn. The memory aid is the fixed air of a shared rule, a friendship with terms, a system. Modern astrology often puts Uranus in charge of Aquarius and therefore talks about the eleventh as the house of reform and of uncommon alliances. This library leads with Saturn so the dignity scheme stays classical. Uranus may still be read as a modern guest when he is in the house or tightly aspected. Say which dialect you are using. Jupiter rejoices in the eleventh. His joy is a traditional fit: allies, hopes, and the increase that comes from a circle. A Jupiter in the eleventh is a planet in his joy, a roomy friendship or a hope with protection, still subject to his sign and aspects.

The actual eleventh sign is the eleventh from the Ascendant. If Virgo rises in whole signs, the eleventh is Cancer, and the Moon rules the friends. The circle may be lunar: protective, tidal, familial in feeling even when it is not family. Read that cusp. Aquarius is the textbook, not the universal fact.

Opposite the eleventh is the fifth house. The axis joins the personal creative joy to the collective alliance. Children and friends, romance and patronage, the performance and the audience that becomes a circle: when a fifth-house project needs supporters, or a friendship becomes a romance, you are walking this axis. Read both rulers before you collapse the story into one house.

Planets in the eleventh describe the style of alliance. Saturn here is topically native in the traditional scheme, a friendship of duty, a hope that matures slowly, a group with a real boundary. Jupiter, in his joy, enlarges the same topics. Venus describes affection in the group and the risk of keeping a harmony that avoids a truth. Mars describes allies in a contest, or a friendship that runs hot. The Sun describes a circle organized around a center, sometimes the person, sometimes a leader they serve. Mercury describes friends of the mind, correspondence, plans made of words.

Follow the ruler. An eleventh ruler in the tenth ties allies to the vocation, the board, the colleagues who are also the career. An eleventh ruler in the seventh makes a friend and a partner hard to distinguish, which is a style, not a problem by itself.

In practice, ask whom this chart trusts when trust is not romance and not blood, and what future that trust is for. For the natural sign, read Aquarius. For the traditional ruler, read Saturn. For the planet that rejoices here, read Jupiter.
