The sixth house
The sixth house is the house of necessary work. Traditional topics include servants and subordinates in the language of older societies, labor, skill, small animals, and illness. The illness topic needs a plain boundary. Historical astrology used the sixth house, along with the body of the first, when it talked about health. This library names that history so you can read old books without getting lost. It does not offer a health reading, a diagnosis, or a prediction about the body. In a contemporary life the sixth house is also the shift, the desk, the maintenance, the pet, and the humble competence that keeps a day from falling apart.
It is a cadent house, and cadent houses are traditionally the least commanding of the three types. The sixth falls away from the Descendant side's approach to the seventh in the usual wheel, a place of toil rather than of honor. Cadence is not contempt. A life can be organized, honorably, around skill and service. The ranking tells you the house does not angularly rule the chart. The biography tells you whether the topic is central anyway.
The natural sign is Virgo, and the natural ruler is Mercury, who is also exalted in Virgo. The memory aid is sorting, craft, and the edit. Mars rejoices in the sixth house. His joy here is effort, toil, and the heat that gets a job done, not a medical emblem. A Mars in the sixth is a planet in his joy, which can look like excellent stamina and can look like inflammation of every small task. Sign and aspects decide the tone. Do not hear "joy" as "pleasant." Hear it as "this place suits the planet's method."
The actual sixth-house sign is the sixth from the Ascendant. If Sagittarius rises in whole signs, the sixth is Taurus, and Venus rules the labor. That chart's work may be about worth, craft, and the body of materials, which is a different sentence from Virgo's sentence. Read the cusp you have.
Opposite the sixth is the twelfth house. Both are cadent, and both have been called unfortunate in older texts, the sixth for toil and illness, the twelfth for confinement and hidden enemies. The axis is the visible labor and the hidden cost, the shift you can name and the withdrawal you might rather not. When a sixth-house problem is really about isolation, institutions, or what cannot be said at work, look across.
Planets in the sixth describe the style of service and of daily maintenance. Mercury is topically native. Saturn can describe a heavy workload or a high standard of competence. Jupiter can describe work that teaches, or a tendency to take on too much because the work feels meaningful. Venus can describe a service of care or of beauty, and a risk of over-accommodating. The Moon can describe a routine that the body depends on. None of these sentences is a diagnosis.
Follow the ruler if the house is empty. A sixth-house ruler in the tenth ties daily labor to public standing, the classic path from the shift to the office. A sixth-house ruler in the second ties labor to livelihood in a direct way.
In practice, ask what this chart is willing to maintain. Skill is the dignified face of the sixth. Resentment of the necessary is the other face. For the natural sign, read Virgo. For the editor, read Mercury. For the planet that rejoices in toil, read Mars.
