What retrograde means in astrology

What retrograde means in astrology is a statement about apparent motion. A planet stations retrograde when its motion along the zodiac seems to stall and turn backward. The planet has not reversed its orbit. Earth and the planet are both moving, and for a stretch the line of sight makes the planet appear to retrace degrees it has already crossed. Traditional astrology treats that retracing as review. The planet's topics come back for a second look.

A station is the turn itself. The retrograde station is the moment apparent speed changes from direct to backward. The direct station is the later moment speed changes from backward to direct. Between them the planet is retrograde. Around both stations the motion is slow, so the degree of a station is a place the sky lingers. A natal planet close to that degree is in contact with the season. Contact is a prompt for attention. It is not an appointment in a person's life.

The shadow is the wider stretch of degrees the retrograde will cover. The pre-shadow begins when the planet, still direct, first reaches the degree where it will later station direct. From there it walks ground it is about to retrace. The post-shadow ends when the planet, direct again, reaches the degree where it stationed retrograde. Only then has it cleared the degrees of the review. A shadow is a span of zodiac, measured from the two station degrees. It is not a mood, and it is not a ban.

Each planet retrogrades on its own schedule. Mercury does it several times a year, for a few weeks at a time. Venus and Mars do it less often, and for longer. Jupiter and Saturn spend many months retrograde. The meaning follows the planet, not a single template. Mercury's review is speech, messages, routes, and trade. Venus reviews affection, taste, and alliance. Mars reviews heat, courage, anger, and the will to cut or begin. The outer planets are retrograde so often that a birth chart frequently has one or more of them so. The planets page is the index of those topics.

Worked examples are already dated on this site. Venus stations retrograde at 8°29′ Scorpio on October 3, 2026, passes back into Libra, and turns direct at 22°52′ Libra on November 13, 2026. Mercury in Scorpio stations retrograde at 20°59′ Scorpio on October 24, 2026, and turns direct at 5°02′ Scorpio on November 13, 2026. Mars stations retrograde at 10°26′ Virgo on January 10, 2027, and turns direct at 20°56′ Leo on April 1, 2027. Those dates come from the same ephemeris the reports use. The essays tell the sign-by-sign story. This page keeps the definition.

Dignities still apply while a planet is retrograde. A planet in its own sign is at home, whether the motion is direct or not. A planet in detriment is a poor fit, and the retrograde does not repair the dignity. It asks for a second pass through whatever weather the sign already has. Sect, house, and aspect still matter in a birth chart. Retrograde is one condition of motion, not a replacement for the rest of the reading.

People sometimes speak as if a retrograde forbids signatures, travel, or love. That slogan is modern, not a classical rule. The older note is simpler. The planet's topics are under review, and a brand-new performance of those topics has less support than a correction of one already in motion. What a person does with the season remains their own. This page is a definition for study, not a timetable of outcomes.
